PEMBROKE COLLEGE WINNIE-THE-POOH SOCIETY

MINUTES OF THE ELEVENSES MEETING, 10/5/97

Held in E4.
Present: Ben, Jon, Andrew, Rob, Alasdair.
Apologies: Vicky (with very bad typing), Stephen, Anthony, Sibylle, The High Queen Jon Skeet.

  1. We open the meeting while Ben is out of the room and censure him rapidly for not being there: F., 4, Ag., 0, Abs., 0.

  2. We look up the word `mawkish' for Sibylle: it is defined by Rob's dictionary as "Sentimental in a feeble or sickly way; having a sickly flavour", and is from Old Norse. So there.

  3. Ben arrives, and departs again to get a mug before returning.

  4. Jon announces that he is in danger of falling awake.

  5. Ben reads an affidavit, signed by Sibylle, that states that on the 29th of April 1997, at 1:36 and 29 seconds, she did say, "Orgies are wonderful things to have - at least the ones I had." The document is filed in the Society archives.

  6. Rob reads the minutes of last week's meeting.

  7. We guess what jumper Stephen was wearing in two.

  8. Rob had already passed Jon's test of gentlemanliness over the Election results, and so it really doesn't matter that Jon totally forgot about it until Rob read it out in the minutes.

  9. We lament the passing of Tatties.

  10. Ben has received a large Pooh-stamped parcel from our Californian chapter! We read the manifest, which has words like 'cookies' and 'candy' in it, and states that it doesn't contravene US postal regulations. This is a relief to us all. We vote to open the parcel: F., 3, Ag., 1, Abs., 1; motion carried. The contents are roughly as follows:

Ben immediately proposes Jacyntha Loan Vu, the sender of the parcel, as an Honorary Member, and when the Secretary has declared this constitutional, we vote as follows: F., 4, Ag., 0, Abs., 1; motion carried. Jacyntha is added to the list of Honorary Members.

  11. The sour apple things are tested by everyone but Jon and are pronounced very very sour indeed!

  12. Rob thinks, and I quote, "that we should have a mass debate on what we're going to send her." For some reason this causes amusement, I can't think why.

  13. We check all the sweets for vegetarian suitability on Rob's behalf: he declares himself a "lacto-octo-pesco-vegetarian", for what that's worth.

  14. We propose a vote of thanks to Rob's Mum for supplying the biscuits: F., 3, Ag., 0, Abs., 2; carried.

  15. Ben apparently voted in a Spanish Inquisition Meeting while there was a Winnie-the-Pooh Society meeting in session yesterday (see previous minutes for details). We think this is contrary to his James-ship, but he thinks he should be tried by the Court of Appeal, which is, by precedent, the James. How did we let that one slip past us? Rob wants an immediate E. G. M. to change the Constitution, but no-one will second him, so we remain unchanged.

  16. We debate how one should pronounce 'Alasdair' in French.

  17. The reading is "In Which Eeyore finds the Wolery and Wol moves into it." We make Andrew Temporary Wol and Alasdair Temporary Eeyore for the duration of the reading. The reading, which is by Rob, is preceded by a reading of 'The Contradiction' from the beginning of the New Testament.

  18. We are stumped on whether Pooh, when reading something out that Piglet would have said, would attempt to use Piglet's voice or not. Jon thinks most definitely not, but the vote is F., 2, Ag., 2, Abs., 1, so we have to go and find a visitor to ask. After scouring D staircase we locate Lois, who thinks Pooh probably knows Piglet well enough to do his voice. Jon therefore has to give it his best shot, which is pretty poor really. And I always liked Lois before, too.

  19. Ben says that Eeyore is Rachel. No-one understands him.

  20. Andrew is found to be reading a dictionary, but on being confronted he says he is looking up "blinch". Ben tries to censure him anyway, but the vote comes out F: 1, Ag., 2, Abs., 2. Jon and Alasdair point out that the Dictionary is at least Pooh-related, because it contains many of the same words.

  21. We decide on Alasdair's room next week, which he thinks is U11 but isn't sure, and close because Jon has to go so as to get slaughtered at the Barham Dinner: vote to close, F., 4, Ag., 0, Abs., 1; meeting closed.
